Our sincere thanks go out to the management and staff for their great support without which the day would not have been the unqualified success it goes also to knuckles who kindly lent his pool table to us for the day which allowed the final field of 35 to play and finish at a decent hour. The bar facilities are great, meals first rate and entertainment all day make it a great place to go just to enjoy yourself pool or no pool.

The final field of 35 was a great effort from Peter Watt and Damien Smith (both members of last years NSW team complemented by Greg Dingle working away tirelessly in the background), played under world rules and with a small white it was at times a challenge for a lot of the locals as it was a first for them, but to their credit they played great pool and there were no problems (apart from Chris Blanton whinging about having to play to get into the first round and getting no extra points for winning, but then he is a pom and with the ashes series just around the corner who can blame him for being edgy) with rules that were a bit strange to them. Aside from the local support several young players from around the Tweed travelled down to play and with Callum Wade (The calamari kid) finishing in 5th place it was a good effort from them all, add to the mix John Latta from Lismore and Simon aka Himono Remano & Andrew Buchanan –Grafton, throw in Terry Stevens from Armidale and it was a very competitive field. First blood to the locals as Ken Porter beat no3 seed and current ladies 9 ball champion Mel Malone in a polished display. Swervin` Mervin Freeman, Peter Paynter and Christian played well to go into the 2nd round, but as things got down to the business end Peter Watt and Damien Smith slipped up a gear and predictably made the final, under the double elimination format Damien had the unenviable task of having to beat Watty twice at best of 5, alas the task was just beyond the big hearted Byron Bay property manager, and he fell tantalisingly short in the first set and that was the ball game. Winner Peter Watt 2nd Damian Smith, 3rd my good self-Poppy Cameron and a fine 4th was Brian Green (greenie to his adoring fans). Prizemoney was $350.00, $150 1st, $100 2nd $50 3rd & 4th. There are really too many people to thank for such a great day but if the rest of the series is supported and played in the spirit of the first one they will be well worth attending, Lismore is next (see below) then The Aquatic Bar and Grill, Tweed heads on the 3rd July, and finally on the 24th July at a venue to be advised, although after the success of the first, the Brunswick Hotel would be great.

The next playoffs are being held at the Metropole Hotel 98 Keen Street, Lismore NSW 2480, on Sunday 5th June 10am start $20.00 entry on the day, best of 5 double elimination format (best of 3 back draw).
